In order to provide an environment that would allow people to discuss Lithuanian genealogy, history, and culture, as well as share their personal stories (e,g successes, brick walls, etc.), and general discussion with other Lithuanians in the U.S. and around the world, LGGS currently sponsors (2) email/web-based discussion groups on Yahoo.com. Lithuania-map_smThis is a FREE discussion group established in 1999 and sponsored by the Lithuanian Global Genealogical Society (LGGS). Our purpose is to assist members of this group in the research, discovery and discussion of Lithuanian heritage, culture, language and family genealogy. Whether you are just beginning your search or you are a seasoned genealogist, everyone is invited to contribute to the sharing of history, language, music, culture, and personal stories. Many members of this group are willing to assist you in your research (or will at least point you in the right direction)! We try to assist in all areas of research from naturalization and immigration records, to census, birth, marriage, death records, etc. This group currently has over 1600+ members! NOTE: This is a HIGH volume group, meaning that there are many email messages sent to this group during the day. If you would rather receive a single daily email that contains ALL the messages sent during the day, you can switch to "digest" mode. To do this, send a BLANK email to the digest mode email address listed below. To switch back, send a BLANK email to the full featured mode email address as listed below. You MUST send the email from the account that you used to sign up to this group. RULES/NETIQUETTE

  • The language of our groups are in English;
  • Please, sign your posted messages with your name so we know who you are and others can respond appropriately to your message;
  • [LithGen] is the group for topics of discussion concentrated on Lithuanian genealogy and family genealogy research. For other topics of discussion outside of Lithuanian genealogy, please use our sister group [All_Thing_LT] for this more open and general discussion. You can join each group either through the groups webpage or via email as given above;
  • If you post a message to [LithGen] that may not necessarily be on the topic of Lithuanian genealogy (called OFF TOPIC), or if you are responding to a previous email that is not quite be on topic, please type an [OT] in the Subject heading of your email message, followed by the topic. Example: "Subject: OT: Lithuanian Lita: Questions on Current exchange rate". We ask you to do this so others not interested in reading OFF TOPIC posts can delete these emails;
  • If you are requesting help regarding your family research, it is very helpful to all members of the list if you put the surname of the family you are researching in CAPS in the Subject heading of your email. Example:"Subject: GOSTAUTAS - Help - St. Anthony's, Elizabeth, NJ". If you have more than one surname, that is OK! Example: "Subject: GOSTAUTAS/SIMKUS/POVILAITIS/JOSAITIS - Anyone else researching these names?";
  • TRY TO AVOID USING CAPS IN THE BODY OF YOUR EMAIL MESSAGE AS IT LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING! (even though you are not) Please only use caps to highlight the SURNAMES of the family you are researching;
  • Be friendly, courteous, and kind to other members of this group. We ALL come from different backgrounds, and it is highly likely that our views on certain subjects will be as wide and as diverse as the spellings we find on records and documents when researching Lithuanian surnames. No baiting (unless it involves a fishing pole, line, hook and body of water) and No flaming (unless it involves charcoal, a barbeque and a nice sunny day for a picnic);
  • When responding to previous messages, please try and trim the extraneous information from all the previous messages (i.e. don't include all 10 of the previous posts) and just include the information to which you are responding. This will make your posts easier to read and understand;
  • Speaking of replying to posts - please be sure to CHECK the Subject heading of the email. Often times the topic of conversation changes and the Subject heading doesn't. Please make sure the Subject heading is similar to your topic of conversation. This make messages easier for searching and archiving;
  • Neither group allows attachments. Given the large number of people in these groups, our groups are currently configured to strip attachments from emails to avoid any viruses, spyware, trojans, worms, etc. from inadvertently being passed to other members. Both groups have a FILES and PHOTOS section on the group website that you can use to upload files and photos for sharing with others in the group. To use the FILES and/or PHOTOS section, you must have a Yahoo ID/Password. If you do not have a Yahoo ID/Password when you go to one of the URL's above, click on the button on the right that says "Join This Group!", and on the next page, and then click on the link to "Sign Up" for a FREE Yahoo ID. Follow the remaining instructions;
  • When in doubt about anything that you may wish to post - send us an email! Remember, this group functions through WRITTEN communication - not verbal. We do not have the benefit of being face to face with a person and thus what is intended as playful joking, irony, etc., it may not be properly conveyed in the email;
  • We do not generally allow any type of advertising on any of our groups;

    Pagarbiai/Sincerely,
    Your Groups Owners & Co-Moderators
